May/June 2008
Coming soon to The Village, courtesy of Leith Folk Club, we're delighted to announce
Music Roots
a celebration of the best international traditional, roots and acoustic music
from 27 May to 3 June.
We're still putting together the final programme, but so far we have:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
reaching back into the roots of American music, to the days before bluegrass and country crystalised from the pre war mix of traditional songs and influences
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Laura lights up the stage with a radiant smile, dazzling musicianship and uninhibited delight. In her self-styled "drum-chop-fiddle-pop", she has created a frisky mix of traditional grace and modern sophistication that is completely unlike other.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Groanbox Boys play a wonderful blend of what they call Old Time Mountain Gypsy World Folk Blues Music on accordion, acoustic guitar, banjo, harmonica and odd pieces of percussion, including their self-made "Freedom Boot".
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday 30th May - AT THE NETHERBOW (£tbc)
A member of McGuinness Flint, signed to Apple Records in the 1960's and half of Gallagher & Lyle, Benny hardly needs an introduction. Naming just a few ...... Benny has worked with: Paul McCartney, Mary Hopkin, Eric Clapton, The Blues Band, Ronnie Wood, Ronnie Lane, Elkie Brooks, Sandy Denny, The Manfreds, Ralph McTell, Georgie Fame, Jim Diamond, Andy Fairweather-Low, Don Williams and Gary Brooker, as well as blues legends Arthur Big Boy Cruddup and Champion Jack Dupree.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Burkitt & Stone and our BIG OPENING NIGHT PARTY
Album launch AND Leith Folk CLub 200th gig party on Saturday 31st May;
------------------------------------------------------------------------
A very welcome return for the gritty rootsy rocker on Sunday 1st June -
“…someone who could break alt-country to pop audiences .... a hillbilly
beatnik from Knoxville, TN, who is equal parts Tom T. Hall, Gary Snyder and Richard
Manuel. (His music) not only encompasses blues, country, old time gospel and rock n’
roll; it also shows Morris to be an artist of uncommon vision and reach. (He) may be as
close to “Cosmic American Music” as anyone can get.”
~Pulse!
------------------------------------------------------------------------
winners of Best Group at Radio 2 Folk Awards and great friends of the club on Monday 2nd June;
------------------------------------------------------------------------
A first visit from the utterly delightful and completely unique Ms Vox on Tuesday 3rd June.
She is being let into the country on the strict understanding that she never, ever does this here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53eB6O0xHY0
