The Long Notes

A very welcome return from Jamie Smith, Brian Kelly and Colette O'Leary. Three musicians from very different
backgrounds but sharing one wonderful thing in common – their passion for and understanding of traditional
celtic music in all its shapes and forms.

The House Sisters

Tuesday 22nd July - (£6)

house sisters

A fresh young trio (CARLY BLAIN, RACHEL CROSS, KIRA SLATER) playing traditional and contemporary music from Scotland and beyond. Their thoughtful arrangements combine lovely vocals with fiery fiddles and piano. They play tunes from the Scottish Borders and the rest of Scotland, as well as music from America and Scandinavia and their own compositions.

Rachel Harrington

Tuesday 29th July - (£8)

 rachel H

Rachel Harrington has been doing things in the wrong order for quite some time. She had extensive radio play before performing her first live show, and she opened for Grammy winners and nominees before her debut full-length record was even a glimmer in her eye. Reared among the Pentecostal pines of Oregon, Harrington’s rural gospel roots shone through on her 2004 living room demo. That humble four-song EP spent 13 weeks on the AMA chart and garnered the Seattle siren stellar reviews. By 2006, Rachel was touring with her songwriting hero, Guy Clark, winning national songwriting awards, and performing at large festivals. Her debut CD, The Bootlegger’s Daughter features some of the Northwest’s finest musicians, and co-produced with two-time Grammy winner Garey Shelton. The cd hit 1 on the Euro-Americana Chart, and climbed into the Top 40 on the Americana Music Association’s radio chart in the US. Rachel is joined by multi-instrumentalist Zak Borden (a solid songwriter in his own right) on vocals, mandolin, guitar and various other weapons of mass destruction.

Mark Cool and Lou Vargo

Tuesday 12th August - (£6)

 mark coollou vargo

Tonight, a double bill of American singer-songwriters Mark Cool and Lou Vargo.

Mark Cool (yes that's his real name) is a folk/alt-country/americana singer-songwriter and guitarist based in Durham, North Carolina. Cool has been compared to Townes Van Zandt, Nebraska era Springsteen, Lucinda williams, and Old Crow Medicine Show. His recent album with his band, the Folk Stars was picked by Americana UK magazine as one of the top 20 of 2007, along with Wilco, Okkervil River, Crowded House, Paul Case, and others.

Lou Vargo makes music. Always has. “Determined”, “gritty”, “brutally honest” and “absolutely brilliant” are just a few ways the U.S. and European press have described Lou Vargo and his debut EP “American Disaster”. For the EP he recruited some of the finest players the world has to offer, including Al Perkins (Gram Parsons, the Byrds, Rolling Stones, the Eagles), Stuart Duncan (Bela Fleck, Dolly Parton, George Strait), Dave Roe (Johnny Cash, Dwight Yoakum) and Lou’s good friend Joe Smyth of Sawyer Brown.
